OATLANDS' course was opened on July 4, 1931. The Governor of NSW, Sir Philip Game, hit a ball from the first tee, now the twelfth, to officially declare the course open.
Located on one of the oldest settlements in Australia (Parramatta), the course is only minutes from the 2000 Olympic Games site.
It may be a relatively young golf club formed in 1931, but its fairways, greens and clubhouse are rich in historical background. The land was nearly acquired by the Army in 1947, and was again almost lost after serious threat to tenure in 1950. Finally, the club was purchased by its members in 1958, who each scraped together £100 to buy the Oatlands Golf Club by debenture.
The course, designed by Robert Frank, is not long, but it is particularly challenging to any level of player and boasts some of the best par 3s in the land. Accuracy rather than distance is the key to a good score on this course.
