THE fifth and final qualifying event for the Queensland Race Series was played on the fantastic Indooroopilly Golf Club (West Course) layout. Located on a bend of the Brisbane River, Indooroopilly GC has over 75 years of rich golf tradition.
There was a mixture of excitement and anticipation in the air prior to play commencing. All competitors’ eyes were firmly on the possibility of qualifying for the State Final at the stunning Brookwater Golf & Country Club on Sunday March 29th 2015.
Thank you to all golfers who played this final qualifying event in Queensland.
Play got underway in wet conditions with morning showers providing an additional challenge to golfers. It wasn’t long before the sun broke through and the scores started heating up. Within the first couple of hours of play, news started to travel around the course of a ‘Hole in One’ on the difficult 175m par three 4th hole (on the Red Nine). Jason Moore’s perfectly executed 5-iron was undoubtedly the highlight of the day – congratulations Jason on your first hole in one. He becomes the second player in this year’s Race Series to achieve a hole-in-one and is now also $1,000 richer for his efforts. What a great stage to achieve such a memorable result.
Scoring was very tight across all three grades. Congratulations to our overall winner Chris O’Brien, who fired 42 points to win the event. Other grade winners were Patrick Bowe (A-grade – 40 Points) and Paul Hogan (C-grade – 41 Points). To view full results from the day click here.
Peter Haines hit the best approach (235cm) into the Golf Buddy Nearest The Pin Challenge par three 8th Hole on the Gold Nine. For his efforts, Haines received the Golf Buddy GPS unit thanks to our wonderful sponsors. You can view the current national leaderboard of the Golf Buddy NTP Challenge here.
Our Cobra Puma long drive winners were very worthy at this event, given the par five 10th hole was playing into the wind. Congratulations Peter Stone (251m) who took out the men’s division and Liz Muenchow (154m) who took out the ladies' division. After an extended five game series in 2014/15 Queensland Race to Bonville, it was David Shearer from Gailes Golf Club who narrowly won the Queensland Order of Merit. David came home strongly with 40 points at the final event to just edge out Renan White, who led for much of the series.
David is now the first player to qualify into Team QLD for the National Final at Bonville Golf Resort in May. You can view the full Order of Merit standings here.
Well done and thank you to all golfers who participated in the qualifying events in Queensland. Record fields and quality golf courses have ensured a successful series to date.
We now look forward to the State Final to be played at Brookwater Golf & Country Club on March 29. It will be there that Team QLD will take shape for the National Final.
