A BEAUTIFUL morning awaited a field of 50 golfers for round three of the WA 2014/15 Race to Bonville series at the world-renowned Joondalup Resort. The course was in its usual pristine condition and as the weather warmed up, so did the golf.
Scoring on the day was certainly hot with several players breaking 40 points and count backs needed to separate the top 10 players on the day.
First time Race participant Brian Smith took a liking to the conditions and was the day’s winner with a very impressive 45 points. Brian’s win saw him take home the brand new Cobra Puma stand bag, a Race Series winner's medal and also gains him free entry into the WA state final to be held at Royal Fremantle GC.
The day’s other grade winners were Brett Hurley who took out B-grade with 42 point on a count back from Roy Khoh. Richard O’Hara who took out A-grade with 38 points.
One of the big stories of the day was a very near hole-in-one on the 'Golf Buddy Nearest To Pin' hole, held on the Dunes 4th hole. A superb shot by Kelvin Wharekura finished only 21cm away from the pin and Kelvin now leads the Golf Buddy NTP National Leaderboard and will certainly be tough to knock off in the second half of the series.
The day’s other NTP on the Lakes 8th hole was taken out by NSW Race regular Tracey Mitchell who made the most of her trip West by hitting her approach to inside a metre for the win.
The Cobra Puma Go Looong Challenge was held on the Lakes 4th hole and the winners were Francios Van Zyl for his drive of 238 metres and, for second time in a row, Jane Kim who took out the ladies division for her drive of 177 metres.
There is now just one round remaining in the WA qualifying series and the WA Order of Merit could be won by anybody inside the top 10.
Another good score by RD 1 winner Bryon Tuckey sees him skip to the lead again but Bryon will need another solid score at the final at Lake Karrinyup to hold off a number of competitors, including 2013/14 WA Order of Merit winner Shane McEachran who is trying valiantly to defend his title.
