QUEENSLAND'S Bowe family have made it a quinella with Donal Bowe claiming the 2014/15 Race to Bonville final almost a year to the day after elder brother Patrick took the crown.
Donal, a 10-marker at Woodburn-Evans Golf Club in NSW but a resident of Queensland, amassed an impressive 71 stableford points over 36 holes at the stunning Bonville Golf Resort near Coffs Harbour in Northern NSW.
South Australia's Michael Haberfield finished second on a countback from Queensland's Scott Hedger, both firing 67 points for the two rounds.
Bowe was also the A Grade winner with South Australia's Mark Foley taking B Grade on a countback from WA's Bryon Tuckey and Queensland's Hedger the C Grade champion.
Pymble Golf Club's Sandra O'Donnell took top honours as leading lady with 54 points.
Bowe, who plays cross handed, was solid over the closing holes as scores at the top of the leader board began to tighten up.
A spectacular hole out from off the green for birdie at the all water carry par-3 17th proved the clinching shot.
“I'm surprised I've won, to be honest,” he said after the round. “Starting three back I thought I would need to play well and some other would need to not play their best and it turns out that's what happened.
“I was in the second last group out and we all sort of dragged each other along and it was a good tussle amongst ourselves.
“I had a feeling the leaders behind weren't going great because they fell behind us a bit and then over the last couple of holes when a few people starting following us and the cameras were on me I thought I might be in the mix.”
The younger Bowe was only in the field at Bonville because defending champion Patrick, who won the Queensland Order of Merit, had a clashing engagement.
“I finished second to him on the Order of Merit but because he couldn't be here I got to come instead so I'm sure he's been watching the scores to see how I go and he'll be happy,” said Donal.
Overnight leaders Dean Slater of Tasmania and Todd Christensen of Western Australia found the going at the Bonville layout tougher in round two after both returning 37 point rounds on day one.
Bowe was the only player in the field to break handicap on day two, his 37 points one better than playing parter Haberfield and two better than third member of the group Adam Sutherland.
In the teams event Queensland extended a 10 point overnight lead to finish on 288 points and claim their third Race to Bonville crown by 21 points from South Australia.
NSW finished third on 257, Western Australia fourth on 251, Victoria fifth on 234 and Tasmania taking the wooden spoon on 221.
